HIMSS 2017 is Next Week
Here comes HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society)! One of my favorite but occasionally most frustrating events of the year. I love the fact that in one place we will have some of our best minds in healthcare melding together for a few days with the noble and needed intent of moving our industry and patient care forward. I love that there will be innovators from every corner of the country pushing their wares and providing much needed solutions for our beleaguered practitioners and the patients that they serve.
But frequently I feel frustrated that we, as a technology industry, aren’t hitting the mark for our prospects and clients as often as we should. We often fall into the trap of building products in a vacuum only to watch the nuances of the real healthcare world send us back to the drawing board. For providers and health systems it’s often very difficult to sift through the multitude of potential solutions to find the the one that might address their needs. And, often, the solution that is needed or wanted doesn’t exist at all. That is hard to imagine when overlooking the enormity of the HIMSS exhibit hall, but it’s unfortunately true.
Healthcare’s Biggest Challenges
Despite the fact that HIMSS will most certainly be showcasing a seemingly endless number of companies that have created excellent solutions to real problems; I believe that some of our best innovators and some of our best potential solutions to the challenges that we face in healthcare aren’t to be found in the booths of our exhibitors. In fact, I would suggest that the good Doctors and Administrators of Health Systems in attendance at HIMSS need only look down at their own badges, their inner-entrepreneurial spirits, or within the walls of their own health systems to find the innovations, creative ideas, business practices, and solutions that can move our industry forward.
These individuals and organizations are truly on the front lines of healthcare. They see, wrestle with, and solve healthcare’s challenges on a daily basis. But those breakthroughs are typically isolated and don’t break out beyond the billing associates, mid-levels, nurses, doctors, or departments that have dreamt of them or put them into practice. Sometimes one of these home grown ideas becomes patentable IP to help heal healthcare. More often than not, they never see the light of day.
How do we liberate good ideas for the greater good?
The Combine was created to solve this challenge. The Combine’s seasoned group of entrepreneurs know how to dig deep into healthcare to extract diamonds in the rough. They will find the innovations lying dormant in the individuals and organizations on the front lines of healthcare. The Combine has the experience needed to partner with those organizations to take an idea from germination to commercialization. As an entrepreneur myself, I immediately fell in love with this company and what it represents for innovation in healthcare. We all either are or will be patients one day; and from where I’m sitting, the more good ideas that can become great companies, the better. Now that’s the kind of prescription I like!
Let’s Meet at HIMSS
